The release of Matt Reeves’ The Batman is less than a month away, which means one thing: We’re in the middle of another delightful Robert Pattinson press cycle. In 2020, as you may remember, Pattinson did a memorable interview with GQ in which he discussed—at length—a handheld pasta dish he was trying to create. Now, two years later, we’re still in a pandemic, and Pattinson seems to have spent at least some portion of the last two years finding even more entertaining ways to pass the time. Like, for example, creating ambient electronica music while wearing the Batsuit.
Let’s let him explain.
Pattinson is once again the subject of a GQ profile, and he once again proves to be an excellent interview subject. He clarifies at the start that he is not the “tiny person” he is seen to be by some who were critical of his casting as the Batman. He talks about his decision making process. (“Ah, fuck it! I’ll just play a lighthouse keeper who fucks a mermaid! I think this is the right move!”) He talks about Batman being a sad weirdo and DC being “the kind of emo comic.” He discusses how much he thinks about chairs. (A lot.) And he talks about how he was in the Batsuit all the time.
“I’d be in the tent just making ambient electronic music in the suit, looking over the cowl. There’s something about the construction of the cowl that makes it very difficult to read books, so you have to kind of almost lean forward to see out of the cowl.”
Please take a moment, if you will, to imagine this: Batman, played by the large Robert Pattinson, peering over his cowl, trying to read, or composing a soothing jam.
Let’s all take this image into our viewings of The Batman, shall we? The film arrives in theaters on March 4th.
